Nigel Thean Kuok Wui
Violoncello

In 2018 Nigel became the first Malaysian prizewinner at the International Karl Davidov Competition in Latvia. Nigel began cello at age seven and is now studying for his master’s degree with Leonid Gorokhov at the Hochschule für Musik Hanover. A keen chamber musician, Nigel plays in various ensembles and has given recitals across Europe and Asia. He has been featured at the Hitzacker Sommerliche Musiktage, Mid-Somerset Festival, and Verbier Festival.
His discography includes Georg Katzer’s song cycle …blüht nur im Gesang (Deutschlandfunk) and Saint Saëns’s “Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix” (NDR). Nigel plays a Jacques Pierre Thibout cello (1838) on generous loan from the Fritz Behrens Foundation.
